Stirring from the belly of the vast plains of the Kruger National Park – the animals are at their most active at the soft touch of the rising sun.Growing up in Cape Town, the African bush wasn’t the usual holiday choice. Autumn and Spring are undoubtedly my favourite times of the year to visit when the green begins to turn to gold – with just enough shedding of the leaves to allow for improved game sightings and when green shots show signs of life after the dry winter months.The weather is sweet, the watering holes are still alive with activity and to my delight there are far less insects and mosquitoes waiting to attack.
The thrill of the hunt in the Kruger rings true not only for the animals in the park but also those of us on a self-drive.Whether you stick to the tarred stretch of road or venture off the beaten track, there’s an exciting opportunity around every corner – from the most dazzling large animals to the tiniest blue waxbill.
