A 98-year-old chapel was destroyed after it was angulfed by a massive fire in
Multiple firefighters were called out after a historic chapel broke out in flames in Salt Lake City on Sunday, May 26, 2024. Crews responded to the Wells Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints early Sunday morning and rescued two people from the balcony of the burning building.
The chapel — located at 500 East Hollywood Avenue — had been out of use since it was damaged by an earthquake in 2020, and it was scheduled to be demolished in the upcoming weeks. However, crews began to tear down the chapel after flames were extinguished on Sunday because they said it was unsafe to be around.Officials of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provided the following statement to 2News on Sunday:
"We are aware of the fire this morning at the Wells Ward building, and the cause of the fire will need to be determined by fire officials. All inquiries about the cause should be directed to them. On background, this building was previously scheduled to be demolished in the coming weeks due to stability and safety concerns related to the 2020 earthquake and it hasn't been occupied by a congregation since then."
