The scene outside of Life Care Center of Kirkland nursing home near Seattle: Relatives traveling hundreds of miles to talk through closed windows. A bunny-suited cleaning team. Resident after resident taken away on a stretcher. KUOW
I’ve spent much of the last two weeks standing at the epicenter of the first coronavirus outbreak in the U.S.
Journalists, both local and national, have gathered near a parking lot amid a cluster of pine trees, day and night, outside of the Life Care Center of Kirkland nursing home.“It’s kind of tough but it’s the best we can do at this point,” said Charlie Campbell, who traveled from Silver City, New Mexico, to bring his mother Dorothy to see his father Gene through a pane of glass.
They have watched as residents were wheeled out of the long-term care facility into ambulances on stretcher, after stretcher, after stretcher."Love really is a big part of healing," LaVoice said, as she tied blue ribbons and flowers to trees that she hoped the remaining residents would appreciate seeing from their windows.
As of this writing, on Friday, March 13, there have been 37 COVID-19 related deaths in Washington state. A number that will almost certainly rise. Below are some of the moments that I've witnessed at the scene of the first coronavirus outbreak in the United States.
