Photo Essay: The long journey home as coronavirus forces worker exodus COVID19Quarantine

The coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc in the Philippines and all over the world, wrecking livelihoods and jobs as businesses are forced to shut down.

As the third batch of more than 600 workers returned to the province of Albay, they face an uncertain future in the shadow of COVID-19.Many of the workers say that it is almost impossible to survive in Metro Manila with the high cost of living especially during this time of the pandemic. Many said they did not get any form of government financial support because they are not registered residents of Metro Manila.

Upon arrival in Albay at 8 a.m. of June 6, all the passengers onboard the 5 buses were escorted to Barangay Tula Tula, Ligao City where the bus manifest and passengers were checked and a preliminary thermal scan were done on each of the passengers. The scorching sun turned the buses into an instant oven on wheels even early in the morning.

More than two thousand workers have returned home to their provinces since April. The recent batch of more than 600 Albayanons was made possible through the initiative of local government unit of Legazpi, the office of the Governor of Albay, the Office of the Vice President, #Shop&Share and the missionaries of the Redemptorist Congregation who remained true to the mission of the Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.
