The City of Phoenix is bringing back red light cameras at ten intersections, following a surge in red-light running accidents resulting in fatalities and injuries. The decision comes after a near-unanimous vote by the city council, citing a 60% reduction in red-light violations when cameras were previously in use. The council also highlighted the need to address worsening driver behavior and improve traffic safety. The city will prioritize intersections with high crash risks and histories of red-light running.

This year, red light cameras will be back at City of Phoenix intersections, after a near-unanimous vote from the city council.“Red means stop, yellow means slow down — I think that has changed over the years due to our lack of ability to enforce it,' Councilwoman Ann O'Brien from District One said. The city will place ten cameras at intersections to be chosen based on crash risk and history of red-light running.
