Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams wins the National Basketball Coaches Association's Coach of the Year award for a second straight year.

In the first of a two-part interview with the Arizona Republic, Suns coach Monty Williams talks about how last year's championship loss still hurts.Suns coach Monty Williams often expresses his appreciation for this second opportunity to be an NBA head coach again.

"I am just grateful to be in this position, I’m grateful for the guys that I get to coach and work with, but I’m also grateful that God blessed me to be able to come here and be the coach of the Phoenix Suns because when I came down the escalator to my press conference, I did not know what to expect," Williams said last week.

Williams probably didn't envision reaching the NBA Finals in his second season last year in Phoenix or the Suns winning a single-season franchise record 64 games this season. That success certainly factored in Williams winning the National Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year Award in back-to-back years. “I am thrilled and overwhelmed to be recognized by my peers and receive the Michael H. Goldberg Coach of the Year Award from the NBCA,” said Williams in a news release. “The coaches in our league sacrifice so much to serve their teams, and there are so many outstanding coaches deserving of this honor.

The Suns had a losing record in their first season under Williams, but they closed it out with an amazing 8-0 bubble run to set the stage for what has happened since.Phoenix finished last season with the NBA's second-best record at 51-21 in an NBA-shortened season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Phoenix has followed that up with a 64-win season this year that includes a franchise-record 18-game win streak and franchise-best 32-9 road record.
