The shooting happened shortly before midnight near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street.
PHOENIX — An investigation is underway after Phoenix police shot and killed an armed shoplifting suspect near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street.
When the officer approached, the two men fled in different directions. The officer followed the man running east on Roosevelt Street, and when he got close the suspect pulled out a handgun and started shooting at him, police said. The intersection, outside of Carl Hayden High School is expected to be closed for some time as detectives investigate. The second person involved in the shoplifting wasn't found.Phoenix police said that school will be starting on time. 12News has reached out to the school, but we have not received a response as of 5 a.m.
