The Phillies tried for more than four months to avoid this outcome with top pitching prospect Andrew Painter but their medical staff is now recommending he undergo Tommy John surgery on his injured right elbow, the team announced in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
An MRI conducted within the last two weeks showed signs of healing in Painter's elbow, but the soreness didn't go away. "Considering the timing of the season and that Painter is still experiencing symptoms, the Phillies medical staff has recommended he undergo a right elbow UCL reconstruction with ulnar nerve transposition surgery."
