Harper was ejected from Friday's game in the first inning after a strikeout.
Major League Baseball umpires have been under major scrutiny throughout this 2024 season and the spotlight they’re under may get a little brighter after last night’s first-inning ejection of Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper.
Harper was ejected in the first inning of Friday night’s extra-inning loss to the Colorado Rockies by home plate umpire Brian Walsh, apparently for nothing more than standing in the batter’s box and engaging in conversation.Harper made his feelings known about the ejection to reporters following the Phillies 3-2 loss to the Rockies in 11 innings.
“I mean, I feel like John Tumpane, Alan Porter, Pat Hoberg, even Vic at second tonight, there’s professionals in this league and there’s guys that are really good at their job and they understand it,” Harper said,Harper struck out on three pitches against Rockies starter Ty Blach and wasn’t happy about one of the called strikes,“Obviously, I spiked my helmet, but that wasn’t from frustration over the call,” Harper said, quoted by MLB.com. .
Crew chief Vic Carapazza told a pool of reporters that the helmet spike was a big reason for the ejection. “Bryce Harper was clearly upset about the pitches, and Brian gave him a long leash,” Carapazza said, quoted by MLB.com. “He kept him in the game, and Bryce just kept arguing about balls and strikes. And at the end of the day, equipment violation is basically a big warning, and if you continue to talk about pitches, then Brian and I had to handle it.”Thanks for visiting PennLive.
