Health workers perform coronavirus rapid tests at a stadium in Manila on Tuesday.
The Philippines this month recorded Southeast Asia’s biggest daily jump in coronavirus deaths and biggest single-day increase of confirmed infections, overwhelming healthcare workers and hospitals in some cities. Duterte promised free vaccinations if they became available by late this year, prioritising first the poor and then the middle class, police and military.“I promise you, by December, by the grace of God, we will be back to normal,” Duterte said.
Duterte last week said he had made a plea to Chinese President Xi Jinping to make the Philippines among the first to receive vaccines should one be developed.
