The latest Ookla Speedtest Global Index report showed increases in both mobile download and fixed broadband speeds for the country in December.

The country’s mobile median download increased to an average of 25.12 megabits per second from 24.04Mbps in November. It also represents an improvement of 17.33% since the Marcos administration began in July 2022.

Meanwhile, the December fixed broadband median download speed level improved to 87.13Mbps from the 81.42Mbps registered in the prior month. The latest fixed broadband download speed represents a 7.01% month-to-month and a 26.39% since July 2022 —the start of the new administration.“The continued improvement in internet speed is a welcome development as President Ferdinand E. Marcos, Jr. encourages the country to embrace digitalization if it wants to survive and thrive in a post-pandemic economy,” said NTC officer-in-charge Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez.

The government has been attributing the upward trend in the country’s internet speed to the streamlining and speeding up the issuance of local government units permits in July 2020, which generated a significant increase in permits granted to telcos from July 2020 to November 2022. Improvement on internet speed is largely attributed to this development as telcos are able to fast-track building infrastructure—cellular towers and fiber optic network—necessary in boosting services and connectivity, according to Lopez.
