The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed the presence of China's large Coast Guard vessel, designated as 5901, in waters 54 nautical miles off Capones Island in Zambales. Using Canada's Dark Vessel Detection system, the PCG dispatched assets to monitor the vessel, which was operating within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The PCG emphasized its commitment to ensuring safe fishing operations for Filipino fishermen.
THE Philippine Coast Guard confirmed on Saturday, January 4, 2025, that China’s “monster ship” was spotted in the waters off Capones Island in the province of Zambales.In a statement, the PCG said that the Chinese Coast Guard vessel 5901 was monitored 54 nautical miles off the coast of Capones Island, Zambales, using Canada's Dark Vessel Detection system.PCG air and sea assets were immediately dispatched to the area and were able to confirm the vessel's presence around 5 p.m.
“The PCG vessel and aircraft continuously challenged the presence of the Chinese Coast Guard, emphasizing that it was operating within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone in accordance with the Philippine Maritime Zones Law and UNCLOS ,” the agency said.As of 8 p.m., the PCG’s BRP Cabra continued to monitor the Chinese vessel as it headed west, 85 nautical miles away from Zambales.
