The fans’ burning rage has been met head on by a chairman who showed he's not happy either
It’s the vicious cycle of despair that’s led Rangers to this point where, just five days out from the first day of the season, most of the soon to be decanted Ibrox faithful have already abandoned hope for the new campaign. As the man doing the hiring, firing and repeating, John Bennett is now also the man in the firing line.
Addressing supporters during a 22-minute video mea culpa, finally released as way of explaining the construction shambles that’ll now see Rangers head to Hampden for two months at least, Bennett said: “Becoming chairman, my No.1 mission off the pitch was to rid the club of pre-player trading losses “That number to June 2023 was £10.5m. That’s unsustainable. You can’t just will things to go away, it takes action. But that is well on the way to being eradicated.
No one can accuse the board and the team of investor partners of not putting their money where their hearts are. Bennett has stuck a sum north of £20m quid in since joining Dave King’s boardroom coup back in 2015. Together the men at the top of the Marble Staircase have ponied up £11.5m to fund Philippe Clement’s summer recruitment drive this year alone. But as is often the case, it’s not the amount they’ve invested that has raised questions from fans – rather the way it’s spent.
“When Philippe has been asked in the media about incomings and the transfer strategy, he has said recruiting only for the short-term has caused problems historically. I completely endorse that, even to the point that lessons, brutal lessons, have been learned. At Rangers there’s a twin imperative now. Rangers will always be a club that needs to win, imperative No.1. You don’t get time. Rangers are compelled to win. That’s the impulse, that’s why it exists, it won’t change.
“We’ll never lose that compulsion, that need – ‘I’m a Rangers man, we need to win’. That’s your aim, but if you only recruit for the next season, that’s where you get into that loop. Philippe talked about it when we sat down in May to review the season. He said: ‘John, this is a bigger rebuild than I expected’.
