This article examines enrollment trends at Philadelphia-area medical schools, highlighting the national decline in enrollment for students of color following a Supreme Court decision impacting affirmative action.

The enrollment of students identifying as Black, African American, Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish has declined nationally. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), a non-profit representing accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada, is closely monitoring racial and ethnic diversity in the wake of a 2023 U.S. Supreme Court decision that restricts schools from considering race in applicant evaluations.

While applications from these historically underrepresented groups in medicine saw an increase nationally, enrollment in medical schools for the 2024 academic year dropped. Specifically, first-time enrollment among Black or African American students experienced a 11.6% decline nationwide, marking the third consecutive year of decreasing enrollment. The AAMC's latest dataset, released earlier this month, does not provide race-specific data by school. However, its overall enrollment and application data offers insights into the Philadelphia area's five medical schools. In 2021, nearly 56,500 students applied to these institutions, a 14% surge from 2019. By 2024, just under 50,000 students applied, representing a 1.5% decrease from the previous year. This aligns with a national trend of a 1.2% decline in applications.Enrollment class sizes remained stable in 2024. The five Philadelphia schools had a total of 1,062 first-time enrollees, a mere five fewer than the year before. Since 2017, enrollment has grown by 7% at these regional medical schools, largely due to an increase in average enrollment at Drexel, Temple, and Cooper Rowan. Interestingly, women are playing a key role in driving this enrollment growth. A total of 593 women enrolled in Philadelphia medical schools in 2024, a significant 25% increase from 473 women in 2017
