Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner asked a state court to halt the impeachment proceedings that could result in his removal from office
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner asked a state court to halt thethat could result in his removal from office, as the Republican-led Pennsylvania Senate prepares to put the twice-elected prosecutor on trial next month.
Mr. Krasner on Monday told reporters his impeachment is happening in the context of attacks on liberal prosecutors around the U.S. who sought to“What this is really about is undermining the foundations of our institutions and of democracy,” he said. Republicans hold 27 of 49 Senate seats, following a GOP senator’s recent resignation, meaning they lack the two-thirds majority needed to convict Mr. Krasner and remove him from office. With 49 senators present, a conviction would require 33 votes. The trial is set to start Jan. 18.
The impeachment articles criticized Mr. Krasner’s policies as endangering the public, in part because his office doesn’t prosecute certain lower-level crimes. Other articles claimed he and his office have misled some judges and crime victims. Another accused him of obstructing a House committee’s probe of Philadelphia crime. Mr. Krasner has denied his policies are to blame for high levels of crime in Philadelphia and said his office vigorously prosecutes the most serious and violent crimes.
