The 23-year-old is suddenly the player that everybody - Guardiola included - hoped and believed he could be at Manchester City
It is hard to say which is most indicative of ’s emergence as one of ’s key men: the way that Pep Guardiola now speaks about him or that he has finally got his own song. To the tune of Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen, the City fans sing… “Can’t start a fire, “Can’t start a fire without a spark, “Phil Foden’s on fire, “Running through the middle and the park.” And if there was a spark for Foden, 23, it was the game on December 16.
As Guardiola has said, he started to apply himself better out of possession, more readily counter-pressing opponents, or chasing them back. Advertisement Guardiola never doubted Foden’s quality — he was excited about him as soon as he arrived in Manchester in 2016, when Foden had just turned 16 — but never felt that he had the defensive effort, or the understanding of when to make a sideways or backwards pass, to play as a key, central cog.
