Electric vehicle enthusiasts undermine their cases by insisting EVs are perfect in every way and can rival anything an internal combustion engine can do. Anyone pointing out obvious discrepancies like wobbly range claims and contentious battery capacity are dismissed as dupes, possibly in the pay of the fossil fuel industry.

Professor of Business and Sustainability at Cardiff Business School Peter Wells, has summed up the problem like this. “With electric-powered cars, consumers should be aware that consumption on the highway, especially under cold weather conditions might be significantly higher,” he said. The Peugeot E-3008 underlines my contention of the Jekyll and Hyde nature of even the latest electric cars. This EV, priced at just under £50,000 after tax , was fabulous to drive with instant acceleration available right across the range. The E-3008 looks terrific with impressive quality. Handling and ride were all immaculate, but, on the highway, the range drained away at an alarming rate, removing at least 50% of the claimed range availability at an indicated 75 mph.

There have been media reports of software problems with this vehicle. Peugeot, asked to comment, had this to say – One 1,550-mile trip was from Dieppe to Bordeaux, on to Marseilles then returning to the Channel tunnel at Calais. A second 900-mile trip was the Channel Tunnel to Paris, Nantes, then back to Calais. The 450-mile Dieppe to Bordeaux leg required 3 charging stops, which the Range Rover diesel’s 550-mile range could have managed without stopping. Bordeaux to Marseilles, over 400 miles, required two stops versus none. Marseilles to the Channel Tunnel’s almost 700 miles needed four stops .
