Gabriel Basso as Peter hiding behind boxes in The Night Agent season 3

Netflix's hit spy thriller returns for season 3, as the high-stakes espionage story continues for the lead character, FBI agent Peter Sutherland . Season 3 will likely follow Peter working as a double agent working under broker Jacob Monroe to expose the new president's corruption, following The Night Agent season 2 ending.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan for The Night Agent Season 3, Basso was asked about his future and whether there was any end in sight for the Netflix series. While he admits that,"There's the job security thing, and that's nice," the star acknowledges that he doesn't want the show to result in audiences asking,"Dude, you should have retired six fights ago." "I want Peter to have an arc, believe it or not. There's the job security thing, and that's nice. But what I don't want to do is be the fighter that you're watching, and you're like,"Dude, you should have retired six fights ago." I don't want that. While Basso doesn't want the series to continue indefinitely with Peter as the long-term lead, he does believe that The Night Agent can continue beyond his protagonist with a new titular character, saying:"I want people to be able to watch one and end up in a place where they're like, 'Perfect. That story's told. Now, go make it off with a new night agent or a new facet of this world. But Peter's story is told." I don't want to overstay my welcome at all." Basso's comments come not long after show creator Shawn Ryan discussed The Night Agent's future and potential spinoffs. While he admitted that"There was chatter," none of those ideas is in active development. The creator was close to considering a spinoff right after season 2, but"it was not fully fleshed out." Regardless, it appears that The Night Agent will continue after Ryan shared encouraging news about season 4. While speaking to Deadline, a writers' room started in 2025. Although Netflix has not officially confirmed the season 4 renewal, the creator said,"We’ve been working for a while on the storyline. We have some scripts, we are breaking stories." He also expects a decision on The Night Agent season 4 sometime in a week to a month after season 3 premieres. The Netflix series began with Peter, who was charged with operating a White House emergency phone line, when the phone suddenly rings and pulls him into a conspiracy reaching all the way to the Oval Office. Season 1 became an overnight sensation and was placed in Netflix's Most Popular English-language TV shows of all time. It's currently ranked at #10, with 98,200,000 views. Season 2 couldn't replicate the major viewership numbers of season 1, but it had a decent 13.9 million views during its debut week. It appears that those statistics are enough to continue The Night Agent beyond season 3, especially given recent comments about spinoffs and season 4. Despite promising signs for the show's prospects, Ryan has not addressed whether there are plans to replace Basso's character, Peter, in the foreseeable future. However, in the summer of 2025, the creator made similar comments, saying, "How long does Gabriel want to do the show? The show is called ‘The Night Agent.’ It’s not called ‘The Gabriel Basso Show.’ So there may be a time when he decides he wants to do something else, and there’s a different night agent.” Thus, it's highly possible that the creator and Basso may consider ending Peter's arc soon, but that would ultimately be the star's call when he is ready to move on. The show has set the premise for that to be possible because the series is built around the"Night Action" program, a government operation that assigns agents to sensitive national security threats. While Basso continues to lead The Night Agent cast through season 3, the new installment sees the most significant rotation. While Herthum and Amanda Warren's characters, Jacob Monroe and Catherine Weaver, respectively, are the few returning characters, Luciane Buchanan will not come back as Rose Larkin. While Fola Evans-Akingbola, Ward Horton, and Albert Jones were promoted as series regulars, the fresh faces include David Lyons, Jennifer Morrison, Stephen Moyer, Genesis Rodriguez, Callum Vinson, and Sharma. 180 8.4/10 7/10 The Night Agent 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Drama Mystery Action Thriller Release Date March 23, 2023 Network Netflix Showrunner Shawn Ryan Directors Adam Arkin, Guy Ferland, Millicent Shelton, Ramaa Mosley Writers Seth Fisher, Munis Rashid, Corey Deshon Cast See All
