If Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 had happened, it would have confirmed Peter and Mary Jane had broken up and MJ was 'gone.'
Had Spider-Man 4 been produced, the film would have seen Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson broken up after the events of the third film. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy helped push the superhero movie genre forward with bringing to life one of the greatest comic book characters with actor Tobey Maguire. While the third film was a box office success, it was also somewhat divisive among fans, due to the handling of certain characters.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Spider-Man 4 entered development in 2008 and was set for a release sometime in 2011. Details were sparse, but actors John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway were set to be in the film as the characters Vulture and Black Cat. Following the forced inclusion of Venom in Spider-Man 3, Raimi wanted more creative control over the film. The Vulture was one of his favorite villains, and he wanted to introduce him in the previous film, but was denied by Avi Arad.
Why No Way Home's Peter & MJ Reveal Was More Satisfying For a long time, it looked as if Raimi's Spider-Man future would have been left in the dark, but audiences were shocked to learn that Maguire's portrayal of the character would return to the big screen in the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home. This film revealed that following the events of his third outing, he had time to think about his actions and the people he has faced and hoped to change their fate.
Knowing that Raimi's version of Peter and Mary Jane are better off in No Way Home is a much better fate for the characters. One of the criticisms of Raimi's trilogy was how Peter and MJ's relationship was always shown to be rather rocky and uninteresting and had Spider-Man 4 been produced, it would have been even more frustrating.
