Peter Gallagher on Why He’s Grateful His ‘The O.C.’ Co-Star Mischa Barton Is “Still Alive”

The actor played Sandy Cohen in the hit teen drama, while Barton starred as Marissa Cooper.

Gallagher and Barton worked alongside each other throughout the first three seasons of the show, which ran from 2003 to 2007. Marissa was the love interest of Ryan Atwood , who was taken in by the Cohen family, including Peter,and Kirsten Cohen . However, Barton’s character didn’t return for season four, as Marissa was killed in a car crash in the season three finale.

Following Barton’s quick rise to fame, the actress faced several challenges, including a DUI arrest in 2007. She was later hospitalized in 2009 due to career and stress-related reasons. Gallagher may feel protective of Barton because his own rise to fame was much more gradual and with less scrutiny.
