Early polls have gained significance as potential contenders for the 2028 presidential election begin to emerge.

Pete Buttigieg, transportation secretary in former President Joe Biden's administration, leads potential 2028 Democratic presidential contenders in New Hampshire, a new poll from the Saint Anselm College Survey Center shows on Monday.

Early polls have gained significance as potential contenders for the 2028 presidential election begin to emerge. Even with the election still years away, polling offers potential insight into candidate viability, voter sentiment and evolving party dynamics, particularly after the pivotal 2024 election cycle.Buttigieg leads the pack with 29 percent of the vote, followed by California Governor Gavin Newsom with 15 percent, New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's 10 percent and former Vice President Kamala Harris' 6 percent. Eleven percent of poll respondents are still unsure. The poll surveyed 1,491 New Hampshire registered voters from March 16 to March 18 and has a margin of error of 2.5 percent. Six hundred and ninety Democratic voters were asked about the potential 2028 Democratic primary. Vice President JD Vance led the pack of possible GOP candidates with 46 percent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio came in a distant second place with 27 percent in the poll. A new Center Square Voters' Voice Poll released last week showed Harris with 31 percent of the potential vote, Newsom with 16 percent, Buttigieg with 7 percent and Ocasio-Cortez with 6 percent. Eighteen percent were not sure when asked which of the 13 Democrats named would garner their support in the primary, last week via email when asked about Center Square Voters' Voice Poll results and if they were surprising: "Not at all, given where we are. Harris has not taken herself out of contention, and given that she was the nominee in 2024, and that many elements of the Democratic Party feel some guilt over the outcome, it doesn’t surprise me that she is at the top. I still think she’d be a potentially disastrous pick for the Party; not the best shot it has of retaking the White House in 2028. "I’m also not surprised by Newsom being number two. He’s been actively campaigning for the spot, is the governor of California, and has been very visible in his attacks on President Trump. I also still think he would not be a particularly good pick for the Democrats, though he is better than Harris. As others come forward, I’d expect to see the field get crowded and much more competitive.""We need to unite as Americans and will this into existence. Kamala Harris 2028." He also added a laughing face emoji to the post."Our economy is bleeding jobs. Prices are up, especially for gas. Yet the White House prioritizes tax cuts for billionaires, while launching a reckless new Middle East war. It doesn't have to stay this way - not if the American people make our voices heard."Presidential candidates typically throw their name into the race after the midterm elections.
