The wind was blowing in, turning Wrigley Field into a test for hitters Saturday afternoon.
An opening finally presented itself for the Mets in the 11th inning, and they capitalized, using a single from Francisco Lindor and a Pete Alonso sacrifice fly off Mychal Givens to score automatic runner Luis Guillorme for a 2-1 victory over the Cubs in Game 1 of a split doubleheader.
Travis Jankowski walked leading off the top of the 10th inning, but the Mets were then stifled by David Robertson, who retired Tomas Nido, Brandon Nimmo and Guillorme in order. In the 11th, Lindor delivered a leadoff single to move Guillorme to third base before Alonso hit a fly to medium right. Guillorme tagged up and scored on the sac fly. Taijuan Walker pitches on Saturday during the Mets’ win over the Cubs.
Alonso delivered an RBI double in the fourth for the Mets’ only run against Stroman. Lindor walked leading off the inning before Alonso doubled to left. The RBI was Alonso’s 75th of the season, a new Mets record for RBIs before All-Star break. Alonso had previously shared the record with David Wright. Walker got dented in the fourth, allowing an RBI single to Schwindel that tied it 1-1. In the inning, Hoerner stole second base against Walker and Patrick Mazieka before Schwindel delivered.
