Animal rights organization PETA proposes a vegan 'Weather Reveal' cake as a replacement for the traditional Groundhog Day festivities, citing concerns about the welfare of Punxsutawney Phil and his family.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals ( PETA ) is urging the discontinuation of Groundhog Day , a beloved American tradition, and proposing a vegan 'weather reveal' cake as a replacement. In a January 20th news release, the animal rights organization stated that it would deliver a delicious 'Weather Reveal' vegan cake every Groundhog Day if Punxsutawney Phil and his family were allowed to retire to a reputable sanctuary.
This, PETA believes, would earn the organization praise from wildlife enthusiasts. PETA also penned a humorous letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, arguing that the groundhog's annual duties were 'no piece of cake.' They emphasized that groundhogs are naturally shy animals who avoid humans. However, year after year, Phil is subjected to the stresses of being transported to Gobler’s Knob, placed on stage, and exposed to a noisy announcer, screaming crowds, and flashing lights – all against his natural instincts. PETA president Ingrid Newkirk called for Groundhog Day officials to 'sprinkle some happiness' into Phil's life by letting him retire. She argued that while in the wild, groundhogs engage in natural behaviors like burrowing, communicating, and climbing trees, Phil is denied these opportunities for a 'tired old gimmick.' PETA stated that it had yet to receive a response from the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club and urged them to develop 'kinder, innovative' traditions that prioritize animal welfare. They suggested the club replace Phil with a delicious vegan 'Weather Reveal' cake as an alternative to exploiting wild animals. PETA has previously proposed alternatives to Groundhog Day, including sending a giant gold coin to replace the animal in 2024. Groundhog Day, celebrated in the U.S. since 1887, continues to draw thousands of observers to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, every year on February 2nd to witness Phil's weather prediction.
