Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf, who seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999, has died at a hospital in Dubai aged 79
Mr Musharraf supported the “war on terror” following the 11 September attacks on the US, with Pakistan providing US forces ground and air access to landlocked Afghanistan to chase down the al Qaeda militants identified as being behind the terror plot.
His alliance with the US in its pursuit of al Qaeda was at odds with Pakistan’s longstanding policy of support for the Taliban, who then as now control neighbouring Afghanistan. This stance made Mr Musharraf a target for militants in Pakistan and lead him to lose support among conservative factions in Pakistan. When he returned in 2013 he was arrested and barred from standing for election. He was also charged with treason and sentenced to death but the ruling was later overturned.
He travelled to Dubai in 2016 for medical treatment despite facing treason charges at the time and never returned.
