Children in day care get taste buds tuned for lifetime of healthy eating

“Do you like the pasta, yes?” asked Myrna Peralta, president and CEO of CentroNía child care, in the District’s Columbia Heights neighborhood. The children smiled and nodded, some more enthusiastic than others. “It’s good that you like it,” Peralta said. “We all want healthy food every day, yes?”

Youngsters who come into child care with taste buds already accustomed to salty, sugary and fatty foods go through a weaning process. The center also features a small garden. It gives children an opportunity to plant tomato and cucumber seeds, water the plants and watch them grow, harvest the produce, bring it to the kitchen, and see how it is prepared and served on plates.
