A former Hells Angel outlined his personal conversion to Christianity at the recent Enterprise Lions Club meeting.
FOR THE LEDGER The words “Hells Angels” conjures images of black leather-clad males with beards, sunglasses, and helmets roaring through town on their Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
The origins of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club vary according to the source of the information. One source states that it was formed in 1948; another says the club was founded in 1951. Most sources agree that the name was derived from aviation groups in both World War 1 and World War 2, where aviators named their squadrons “fierce, death-defying titles.
Grout reported that his parents divorced when he was a small child, and his grandparents raised him. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marines and was trained as a sniper. When he left the military because of a medical condition, he said he fell into a depression and started drinking and “hanging out” with a motorcycle gang. He eventually found himself in San Diego, California, where he joined the Hells Angels and became “an enforcer” for the gang.
Grout reported that each group he rides with usually has about 12 bikers and that it takes a long time to plan a visit to one of the outlaw camps. Most camps are set up with guards at the entrances, and several of the riders in Grout’s group will approach the guards and talk to them about their mission. Other riders stay back at the hotel in case the visit to the camp does not go well and they have to go in and rescue their comrades.
When asked if there are motorcycle clubs or gangs in Alabama and more specifically in the local area, Lester replied that yes, there are clubs and gangs in Alabama, and that some residents of the Wiregrass area belong to some of those groups. However, not all motorcycle clubs are “outlaw clubs.” Many are composed of veterans and other citizens who simply enjoy riding with others.
