Soul Surgery founder John Mulligan and his team try to get to the root of a patient's desire to use substances, or the 'why' of why they use.

Years ago, John Mulligan was complaining to his sponsor. The recovering alcoholic was lamenting over, among other things, not having friends.“He said, ‘Why don’t you try being a friend?’ That hit me pretty hard. I wasn’t happy with his answer but he was correct,” said Mulligan, the founder of Soul Surgery, the Scottsdale drug and alcohol recovery center he launched in 2016.

Getting to that answer is perhaps the most difficult journey a client travels. But once they get to a place of true acceptance, not just admittance, of their addiction and who they are without the fog of substances, it is vital to the process. That’s when the real work begins. Soul Surgery is part of a $42 billion treatment of drug and alcohol addiction industry with more than 15,000 addiction treatment facilities in the US, according to MarketWatch. Also, substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselor employment are expected to grow by 23% from 2020 to 2030, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Some come in and say they can only do 45 days. We start out with that and see how it goes. Often, they end up staying longer,” Mulligan said. This was the case for John Giganti, who has been sober for three years after graduating from Soul Surgery. He moved into a downtown Detroit bachelor pad after his divorce and everything deteriorated rapidly. He was drinking a bottle of whiskey a day. In 2019, Gigante sought a change and moved to Arizona, where his cousin lives. He white-knuckled 60 days of sobriety — the longest he completed since he started drinking — during that transition by going cold turkey.

As the Soul Surgery team pushed Gigani to confront his “why,” he finally first admitted he had a problem. A huge weight was lifted. “Relating to somebody that’s been through everything that you’ve been through is really helpful. They have a mentality of concerned parents … they share what worked for them and what didn’t,” he said.

“I was selfish. They owe me and my addiction kept telling me that. It told me not to work and to resent my family for not taking care of me,” he said. Mulligan had owned an audio video company that was responsible for the systems in commercial business and sports venues, including spring training ballparks.
