The second human case of the bird flu in the U.S. was reported in Texas by someone who had direct contact with dairy cattle.

A person is being treated for the bird flu after having direct exposure to dairy cattle presumed to be infected by the virus, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported Monday.
Though this is the second human case of the illness in the nation, it’s the first linked to exposure to cattle.The virus has impacted dairy cows in multiple states states in recent weeks, including some outbreaks dating back to MarchThe Texas patient’s only symptom was eye inflammation, according to DSHS. The person was tested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention over the weekend and is being treated with the antiviral drug oseltamivir.Thousands of cows died in the Panhandle fires.
The bird flu — also called avian influenza and H5N1 flu — is a flu virus that usually infects wild birds and can spread to domestic birds and other animals. It occasionally infects people, though it’s extremely rare for it to be transmitted from one person to another, health officials say. People who have been diagnosed with the bird flu have shown symptoms ranging from mild, such as an eye infection and upper respiratory symptoms, to severe such as pneumonia and death, according to DSHS., Breaking News Reporter.
