MENTOR, Ohio — The Mentor Police SWAT team is currently on the scene of a barricaded subject who allegedly struck and injured a person with a vehicle, police said.
Around 11 a.m., an SUV was traveling on Headlands Road between Jordan Drive near Shipman's Pond when it encountered two bicyclists, police said. One bicyclist was struck by the vehicle and sustained a leg injury. The person was transported to a nearby hospital, police said. Mentor Police Chief Ken Gunsch said the driver then turned and confronted one of the bike riders.
" actually got out of the vehicle and physically assaulted him," Gunsch said. The second bicyclist sustained minor injuries and was also transported. The driver of the SUV then fled to a home on Orchard Drive and barricaded himself, police said.
"Luckily people on the scene were able to get his license plate, and we found his car over at his residence," Gunsch said. Mentor Police's SWAT team was dispatched to establish a perimeter and is currently negotiating with the person to come out of the house, police said. Mentor Police said the SWAT team breached windows in the suspect's home and deployed gas in an attempt to get him to surrender.
The chief has directed the following message to the public:"Just stay away from the area right now while we have the situation going on and, you know, hopefully we can come to a resolution with it.
