Michael Nero, now 45, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after a jury convicted him of two counts of second-degree assault for attacking a corrections officer who was conducting a weapons search on another inmate Nov. 27, 2023, prosecutors said. At the time, Nero was serving a 15-year sentence for a 2011 conviction of second-degree burglary and assault, according to prosecutors. He was also convicted of second-degree rape and assault in 2003. Prosecutors said Nero was arrested July 30, 2025 after an indictment was unsealed in connection to the attack of the prison guard.My office takes violence in a correctional facility seriously," District Attorney Vincent Hemming said in a statement.
