Josh Harding may have grown up in Oklahoma, but that didn’t mean his parents were thrilled when, right after college graduation, a friend’s dad offered to teach him to be a “land man.” It meant he would help speculators get titles, leases and permits to drill new oil and gas wells.
But in 2006, when Harding graduated with a double major in journalism and economics, natural gas prices were soaring. It was the first real energy-related hiring boom in the area since the stock market crash of 1987, so he said most jobs in the sector were held by folks older than 50. That meant a lot of opportunity for younger people, like Harding, who could advance quickly if they were willing to work hard.
Today, he’s senior manager of land acquisition for Avantus, a green energy company based in Los Angeles. He’s working remotely from Oklahoma for now, but plans to move his family to Orange County later this year. Former colleagues, and even strangers on LinkedIn, sometimes reach out to ask how the sectors compare.
