Percy holds up riptide in Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians star Walker Scobell reveals that he requested one of his co-stars to be lit on fire. Scobell plays the titular demigod in the Disney+ series, which adapts Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympian books.
Season 2 adapts the second novel, Sea of Monsters, where Percy meets a cyclops named Tyson. While talking with Liam Crowley for ScreenRant's Percy Jackson season 2 cover story, Scobell explained that he prefers practical effects and finished sets over CGI, as seemingly small details like a finished wall or a finished building in the background can help him better understand and experience what his character is seeing. Season 2's practical effects included Tyson actor Daniel Diemer being lit on fire multiple times, which "helps get into it" and he would request it because"it's funny to watch him on fire." Check out Scobell's comments below: Oh, a hundred percent. Daniel was lit on fire three times. That helps me get into it. Sometimes I'll request it too, just because. It's funny to watch him on fire . It definitely helps even just little things. Instead of having part of the set and then a green screen, just finishing that wall or finishing that building in the background, it just helps, you know what I mean? To look over and actually see what your character's seeing, it does change things. As a cyclops, Percy Jackson's Tyson is impervious to fire and extreme heat, making him well-suited to working in forges. This gives Tyson a unique strength, as he can be lit on fire without it hurting him, which helps Percy and his friends in their quest. When it comes to the actor behind Tyson, the crew makes sure to conduct all practical effects and stunts safely, which is important under any circumstances, but especially when fire is involved. This allows the Percy Jackson cast, who have become a tightly-knit group, to poke fun at each other in the aftermath of their hard work, as Scobell does in his response. Fire-based effects, more location shooting, and even bigger action sequences are among the many ways that the series has expanded its scope and scale in season 2. Diemer also spoke with ScreenRant about the "massive" scale of season 2 and why location shooting and built sets are preferable to the Volume. It is massive. I've always been a massive proponent in my career of shooting on location, or at least getting the sets built in a practical way. The reason why I fell in love with Lord of the Rings and fantasy in general was you felt like you were on an adventure with the cast, because they were shooting in real locations. You could see for miles, and you knew that it was real. I find they did a fantastic job with the Volume. On green screens of any kind, it can look gorgeous, and I think they did make it look gorgeous, but it feels smaller to me automatically. I feel like audiences can usually tell that there's a manufactured element to it. And so to be able to kind of be on location and be on these built sets, it feels like you're on the adventure with Percy and the gang. Just being in the midst of that world, you can tell that all the kids were so excited to be able to play on these big stages and use all the natural elements to build up the story. Charlie Bushnell, who plays demigod Luke Castellan, was also impressed by the increased scale of season 2, especially when it comes to the Princess Andromeda ship. In his conversation with ScreenRant, he teased that audiences will see the ship in more detail in season 2, episode 3, and that "the sets this season were unreal because everything was practical." I really made that space my own. It was such a cool set. You'll see a good amount of the Princess Andromeda in 203. They even built this massive deck, there was a pool, there was music playing and there was just a big party going on and you really felt like you were on a cruise ship. The Admiralty Suite, which is Luke's quarters, that was a really fun set to be in. It's just crazy seeing what Luke's living situation is now and how he's soaking all that in. It's definitely a step up from Hermes's Cabin, I'd say. The sets this season were unreal because everything was practical. No more Volume stage. Just the attention to detail and all the sets and the design, The Ironclad and the Chariot race track, everything was just insane. It looks incredible. With Scobell, Diemer, and Bushnell fully on board with practical effects and sets, and audiences already taking note of these elements in the trailers, there is a good chance that there will be more of this approach in future seasons. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3, which will adapt The Titan's Curse, was renewed ahead of season 2 and filming began in August. 107 8.7/10 7/10 Percy Jackson & the Olympians 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-PG Drama Family Adventure Fantasy Supernatural Release Date December 19, 2023 Network Disney+ Showrunner Jonathan E.
