Both Percy Jackson live-action films, The Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters, have been added to Netflix's streaming library, bringing the big-screen adaptations of Rick Riordan's Greek mythology-inspired novel series to a new audience. The news highlights the films' plots and star-studded casts while noting the ongoing success of the Disney+ TV series.
Starting today, the two live-action Percy Jackson films, 2010's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and 2013's Percy Jackson : Sea of Monsters, are now available for streaming on Netflix .
These movies are adaptations of Rick Riordan's beloved novel series, which modernizes Greek mythology for a young adult audience. The first film follows teenager Percy Jackson, who discovers he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon. After being targeted by monsters from Greek myth, Percy is taken to Camp Half-Blood, a sanctuary for demigods. There, he trains to control his powers and learns that the gods are on the brink of war.
To prevent a catastrophic conflict on Earth, Percy must embark on a quest to retrieve Zeus's stolen lightning bolt, rescue his mother from Hades, and confront a betrayal within his own ranks. The sequel, Sea of Monsters, sees Percy and his friends journey to the Sea of Monsters (the Bermuda Triangle) to find the Golden Fleece and save the magical tree that protects Camp Half-Blood, while facing new threats from Luke Castellan and the Cyclops Polyphemus.
The films featured a notable ensemble cast, including Logan Lerman as Percy, Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth Chase, Brandon T. Jackson as Grover Underwood, Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, Steve Coogan as Hades, Sean Bean as Zeus, Jake Abel as Luke Castellan, Uma Thurman as Medusa, Catherine Keener as Sally Jackson, and Stanley Tucci as Mr. D (Dionysus). Although the film series concluded after the second installment, the Percy Jackson franchise continues strongly through a popular live-action television series on Disney+.
The show, which also serves as an executive producer, has been renewed for a third season, which will adapt the third book in Riordan's series, The Titan's Curse. While the movies are now on Netflix, the Disney+ series offers a fresh take that many fans feel is more faithful to the source material
