The city of Pepper Pike has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to fund the second phase of the Gates Mills Boulevard Trail.

Pepper Pike will receive a $500,000 ODNR grant to help pay for the second phase of the Gates Mills Boulevard Trail, extending to Cedar Road. City Engineer Don Sheehy told City Council Wednesday (Dec. 18) that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will approve the grant. The trail's first phase extends from the Shaker Boulevard Circle to the Lander Road Circle, at Fairmount Boulevard. The cost for the trail’s first phase is $1.6 million.

Pepper Pike also benefited from $250,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act money to help pay for the trail’s first phase. Sheehy said that the city will receive a similar $500,000 grant for the second phase. Construction and design on the second phase must cost more than $1 million in order for the city to receive the grant. Sheehy said that ODNR sent him notice of the second-phase grant, but that the official announcement will likely come next year.Mayor Richard Bain said, “This is marvelous news. Council will observe that this (notice) came in December, as opposed to March, April,or whenever (a grant would be normally announced). I think that part of that is we’ve established some significant street cred with ODNR, that recognizes a commitment to the project, and we look forward to their finalization (of the grant). And maybe it will even be sooner than later that they get that (grant) to us, so that would be great
