Guardiola took a second to compose himself when a reporter put United in the same title-challenging bracket as Arsenal and Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola doesn't put Manchester United in the same bracket as Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool this season...judging by the Spaniard's brutal reaction to a question about them in his press conference.
City stormed to a Treble last season but Arsenal pushed them all the way in the title race and have started this season strongly. 2021 champions Liverpool also look a renewed force under Jurgen Klopp while Tottenham and Brighton have both picked up four wins from five to start the Premier League season in what is already looking like an engaging title race.
Guardiola's team are of course firm favourites taking five wins from five but speaking ahead of their first Champions League group game against Red Star Belgrade, he was quick to stress there's plenty of competition. He said: “You know how strong are Arsenal, yesterday at Goodison Park they are exceptional. Liverpool again, the mentality will continue there.”
But that was when one reporter cut in to ask about their city rivals United. That sparked a chuckle from Guardiola who took a second to compose himself and continued: “Well they didn’t start like they expected, like Chelsea. But always, they are Man United, and Chelsea sooner or later they will take the rhythm.”
