Manchester City could have won or drawn against Arsenal but lost thanks to a late deflected goal to mean it is successive league defeats
After the end of Manchester City's losing streak, Pep Guardiola said that even a third straight defeat would not have been enough for him to doubt his players.
As with any big game, the build-up was full of subplots. Would City miss Rodri more than Arsenal would miss Bukayo Saka ? Could Arsenal's status as the only unbeaten side in the Premier League survive an abysmal record against City that has sen them lose their last 12 league meetings? The visitors had started well, with Nathan Ake showing a striker's touch to bring down Erling Haaland's flick in the box only to then show a defender's finish and blast over. City pressed intelligently and quickly, and were unfortunate when Julian Alvarez closed down David Raya's clearance but saw the ball ricochet on the wrong side of the post.
That foothold calmed the Blues down, and from there they began to rebuild their control on the game. Every move forward from Guardiola's side halted the momentum in the stands as the noise levels came down a notch. Counting the Community Shield, it was the second consecutive meeting where a deflected goal had helped Arsenal against City. Given their wretched run in this fixture, Arsenal will take huge belief from beating City as they look to mount another title challenge.
