No level of trendiness could ever make me wear gauchos and flip flops again.
I can't walk into any store right now without getting smacked in the face with the fashions of my youth. While there are some revivals I can stand behind — claw clips, baggy jeans, platforms, sure — I think I wore crimped hair, popcorn tees, and gauchos one too many times in my youth to make them feel fresh again. All that being said, the Y2K-era's revival has had me thinking about all the ridiculous combinations we'd wear in the name of fashion.
I mean, we quite literally thought we invented fashion with the dresses-over-jeans combo. Oh, and we weren't selling any newspapers, but you need not leave the house without a newsboy cap. Throw on a bright yellow Livestrong bracelet for extra pizzazz....I'm pretty sure 2000s fashions were a glitch in the matrix.
Maybe you loved purposeless accessories that provided no other function than fashion: the chunkiest belts known to man layered over thin lace camisoles, skinny scarves thrown over every outfit, an eccentric little fedora, or a tie layered over a white tank and cargo pants, à la Avril Lavigne.Nat Jag / WireImage, Kevin Winter / Getty Images
Whatever tickled your fashion fancy in the early aughts, I am dying to see it. Send in your most tragic outfit flashback photos and a little bit about what went through your mind when you threw it together. How old were you? What year was it? Would you wear it today? Why does it scream"tragic" to you? How does it make you feel to see it possibly being revived in 2023?
