Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has called on Brits to reduce their energy usage in defiance of Russian president Vladimir Putin ‘blackmailing’ the nation.

Giving evidence to MPs, Mr Hunt said the public has been given a ‘cushion’ after Liz Truss’ government spared the public the pain of increases by freezing bills with the energy price guarantee. He added: ‘We are saying to people that in the end everyone is going to have to take responsibility for their energy bills and they’re going to have to think about how they’re going to reduce their energy consumption.

Regardless of how dizzyingly high energy prices are by April, Mr Hunt said he will break apart the energy price guarantee anyway.
