🔎 People are handing out financial advice to Gen-Z on TikTok, and making money from it
Hartley’s followers may not be in the millions like Tilbury, but interest in his 60-second money tutorials is not going away. Why? “There is now this need and want forthat was not available for our parents,” he says. “I think [the] perspective has changed. The older generation was used to working nine to five until they’re 65 years old, then collecting a pension or saving up really hard for retirement.
In the summer of 2020, Timothy Paul, 23 from London, found himself graduating into a pandemic job market. Paul had been offered a job on Deloitte’s graduate scheme but his start date was postponed until the following year. All of a sudden, he didn’t know what to do with himself. While Paul is not a qualified mortgage adviser, he is quick to say that he just wants to relay the information that is already out there. “I don’t go into super specific details,” he says. “It’s about letting people know about things that they might not have [heard] already.”
For this reason – people being largely poorly educated around personal finance and receptive to even basic information – she also worries about bad advice being given and solicited on the platform. “It’s something I was very conscious about,” she says. “I’m not an expert. I’m not trying to be a finance coach or anything. I am just explaining concepts so that they’re able to make educated decisions for themselves.
