The Department of Defense’s Replicator 2 initiative will now aim to deliver counter small uncrewed aerial systems.
The focus on counter-drone technologies is due to a rise in the technology being used in real conflict situations. The goal of the Replicator initiative is to create new means for delivering key technologies at speed and scale.
Replicator 1 is working on delivering thousands of low-cost drones by next summer. The Department of Defense aims to spend roughly $1 billion on the initiative in 2024 and 2025. Now, in a memo to senior Pentagon leaders last week, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced “counter small uncrewed aerial systems”, also referred to as C-SUAS, would be the key focus for Replicator 2.“Replicator 2 will tackle the warfighter priority of countering the threat posed by small uncrewed aerial systems to our most critical installations and force concentrations,” Austin explained in the memo.
According to Austin’s memo, the review process highlighted the fact that drones are a growing threat to US defense. Drones have played a large in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East.Department of Defense officials have pointed out that the department is working on a range of capabilities to counter the threat of enemy drones. These include electronic warfare as well as kinetic weapons.
“I am confident the Replicator initiative will complement and advance the significant C-SUAS work already underway in the DOD,” Austin said. “The expectation is that Replicator 2 will assist with overcoming challenges we face in the areas of production capacity, technology innovation, authorities, policies, open system architecture and system integration, and force structure.
