Pentagon is working very hard to modernize and upgrade all three legs of the nuclear triad – land, sea, and air.
The United States is keeping a tab on the growing threats globally – especially the ones posed by Russia and China – and is looking at ways in which it can increase the number of nuclear warheads and launchers at its disposal.
In his speech, Narang also mentioned that the war in Ukraine and the threats given by Russia as it continues to escalate had led to the US re-thinking its strategy on nuclear weapons.“We have begun exploring options to increase future launcher capacity and additional deployed warheads on the land, sea and air legs that could offer national leadership increased flexibility if desired and needed,” Narang said.
He stressed that the Sentinel project to replace the aging Minuteman III missiles is very important for US defense, and that is why the country has decided to keep pushing for it despite the increasing costs.
