The Department of Defense announced a new 'annual media rotation program' that will displace established news organizations like NBC News, The New York Times, NPR, and Politico from their dedicated Pentagon workspaces. The program, effective February 14, 2025, will prioritize outlets like One America News Network, the New York Post, Breitbart, and HuffPost, some of which did not request space and lack a current Pentagon correspondent. This move has sparked criticism from affected outlets and the Pentagon Press Association, who question the transparency and rationale behind such a drastic change.
The Department of Defense announced a sweeping change to the Pentagon press corps on Friday, implementing a new “annual media rotation program” that will effectively displace several major news organizations, including NBC News, The New York Times, National Public Radio (NPR) and Politico. These outlets were informed of the decision via a memo sent to the entire press corps without individual notification.
An accompanying email stated that “no additional information will be provided at this time.” The memo, penned by Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot, acknowledged the longstanding privilege enjoyed by the Pentagon Press Corps, working from dedicated office spaces that provided “coveted and open access to some of the Department’s top military and civilian leaders,” for over half a century. However, Ullyot cited a need to “broaden access to the limited space” of the Correspondents’ Corridor, explaining that the rotation program, commencing February 14, 2025, would provide this opportunity to “outlets that have not previously enjoyed the privilege and journalist value of working from physical office space in the Pentagon.”The rotation program identifies outlets by medium, selecting one each from television, print, radio and online news to cycle in and out. News organizations being rotated out have two weeks to vacate their spaces. Among the new outlets rotating in are One America News Network, which will take NBC News’s spot, the New York Post, Breitbart News Network, and HuffPost. Notably, HuffPost does not currently have a Pentagon correspondent and did not request a space, according to spokesperson Lizzie Grams. “If Secretary Hegseth and the Defense Department are interested in more hard-hitting coverage of their stewardship of the Defense Department from HuffPost, we are ready to deliver,” Grams stated. Despite the Pentagon's reasoning, the sudden and unilateral decision has drawn criticism. NBC News expressed disappointment, stating that the denial of access to a broadcasting booth used for decades “presents significant obstacles to our ability to gather and report news in the national public interest.” They reaffirmed their commitment to reporting with “the same integrity and rigor NBC News always has.” The Pentagon Press Association issued a statement expressing “grave concern” over the “unprecedented move” to single out longstanding, professional media outlets under both Republican and Democratic administrations. They have requested a meeting with DOD officials and pledged to keep the press informed.
