Pensacola officials outline the city's recovery efforts following a significant winter storm. The city's public works department and emergency responders played a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.

The city of Pensacola is making strides to recover from an intense winter storm that struck the Gulf Coast this week. Mayor D.C. Reeves highlighted the efforts undertaken by the city's public works department and emergency responders . He emphasized the crucial role played by city crews and residents staying off the roads. 'With the teams we had, we were able to manage the snow really from the outset,' Reeves stated.

'So, when we started dealing with freezing in the hours that followed, we were dealing with freezing of 2 and 3 inches potentially on our main streets, not 8 or 9 inches if we had left it. If we had left it, we would probably still be dealing with some of those major closures today.' He further added, 'The fact that we were able to have enough resources and enough crew like these guys to be able to make those roads that much easier to handle right after was huge for us.' Reeves also noted that the airport was fully operational 16 hours after the snow ceased, with approximately 4,000 passengers passing through. The Pensacola Police Department received 280 service calls, including one auto accident, three fire calls within the city, and 55 medical emergencies or miscellaneous calls. Pensacola Public Works deployed more than 12 tons of sand and salt across 62 lane miles of roads, focusing on 17 designated 'critical roadways' for emergency responders. They also maintained portions of Florida Department of Transportation roads. Public Works crews logged over 90 hours of road work during the emergency, in addition to the 91 hours completed by five snowplow crews from Roads, Inc. of Northwest Florida, contracted through an emergency agreement with the city. Once roads were deemed safe, Pensacola Sanitation Services resumed trash collection on Thursday, managing to service approximately 40% of the city during this partial shift. City officials anticipate the remaining areas will be collected by the end of Saturday. Pensacola Fleet and Facilities Services aided Sanitation Services in restarting their vehicles after being idle for four days in the cold. They also addressed numerous minor cold-related issues at city facilities. According to officials, the preliminary cost of the winter storm to the city is estimated to range between $500,000 and $600,000
