) - Dozens filled the sanctuary at the Mission Anglican Church Tuesday to honor the life and legacy of Pensacola police officers killed in the line of duty.
For Chief Eric Winstrom, who took over the department earlier this year, learning the stories behind the badge has given him a deeper appreciation for those who serve today.
“Guys like Officer Steven Taylor who even before cell phones would call his wife just to hear her voice and in doing so on the last day of his time on Earth here got to tell her he loved her and he was on his way to a bank robbery which was his last call,” Winstrom said. “How they interacted with their families, the work they did in the community and reminds me of the men and women I work with in the Pensacola Police Department today.
These men and women who are on the street today, they’re a reflection of those who came before them,” he said. Torrea Cross flew in from Tampa to honor her father-in-law, Officer Amos Cross, who was killed during a family disturbance call in 1980.
“It means everything. He was the nicest person that you could have ever met just very humble just loving a great dad, husband everything so everything he did he did with honor,” Cross said. For Cross and other families, the ceremony is a reminder that law enforcement is a family and that bond doesn’t end when an officer falls. Winstrom said it’s important for officers to know their families and memories will never be forgotten.
“It’s so important to know for our police officers to know that in their heart when they go out in the street every day and they have to know that their families will never be forgotten, their memory will never be forgotten,” he said.
