Tony Levestear Scott Jr. admitted to kidnapping a zTrip driver at gunpoint in 2019. He faces a possible life sentence but prosecutors will recommend a lighter punishment.

Five years to the month after police arrested a Pensacola man on charges that he abducted a zTrip driver, a Pensacola man pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal kidnapping charge. Charges in state court against Tony Levestear Scott Jr., 27, have been tied up in proceedings to determine his mental state at the time of the offense. But on Thursday, he accepted responsibility for his actions. Scott’s demeanor in court stood in stark contrast to his behavior on Dec. 17, 2019.

He was mild-mannered, soft-spoken and polite. He answered “yes, sir” to a series of questioned posed by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Beaverstock. Defense attorney Megan Allgood suggested outside the courtroom that Scott is a different person when he is receiving good mental heal treatment. “My experience with him has been that he’s always a really sweet guy,” she said. “He does have mental health issues, and so when he is medicated and feeling well, that’s him. He’s just a really sweet, calm young man.” Scott faces a possible life prison sentence, but prosecutors agreed to recommend punishment at the low end of the range set forth under advisory guidelines. That guideline range has not been calculated, but Allgood told FOX10 News that her best guess is about 10 years. Beaverstock set sentencing for March 24. According to Scott’s written plea agreement, Scott called for a zTrip ride, and the driver arrived at about 8 p.m. at a fast food restaurant on Government Street in Mobile. He placed a roller bag suitcase inside the woman’s trunk and then asked to go to Calhoun Street. But before they got there, Scott told the woman, “Shut yo mouth” and pointed a gun at her, according to the plea agreement. He admitted that he then demanded that she drive him to New York or Chicago. According to court records, the victim told Scott she was running out of gas, so they turned around somewhere between Evergreen and Atmore. Scott then told her they were going to rob a bank, according to the plea documen
