There's a club in one Pennsylvania town that's trying to preserve a rare dog breed from going extinct.

, the Portuguese Barbado da Terceira—also called the “Terceira Cattle Dog”—is a breed of herding and guard dog that originated in the volcanic island of Azores.

“The breed derives from the various dogs brought to the Azores by colonists and visitors since settlement of the islands began in the 15th century, particularly from those with an aptitude for cattle herding,” explains the website. “The Barbado da Terceira dogs are very beautiful and medium-sized...with a voluminous and robust look,” continues the site. “They have strong head with parallel axes. Their muzzle is relatively short and wide, with abundant beards which name the breed.”

However, these voluminous and robust dogs with abundant beards are unfortunately dwindling in their numbers: The samearticle details how a maximum of about 300 are left ‘round the globe, with only roughly 34 in the U.S. Those numbers are exactly why the BDT Club, USA, was started in Lewisburg, as many people plus owners of the pooch want to not only bring awareness to its potential extinction, but to their efforts in keeping them around.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
