The penalties were the result of a mistake by the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.

News 8 On Your Side has a follow-up on a letter some taxpayers mistakenly received from the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue. We first heard about this issue from David Rodney, of Dauphin County. The letter he received showed he owed a penalty of $14.05 for missing the filing deadline. However, he said he filed his state taxes electronically on April 12 and mailed his payment the same day.His check was cashed and canceled on April 16.

But we heard from several viewers who said they had already paid the penalty and wanted to know what's happening to their money.News 8 reached out to the revenue department again and got this statement: 'Taxpayers will be refunded the amount paid. We encourage anyone who believes they were affected to contact us if they have any questions. They can also sign into their tax account online at myPATH.pa.gov to manage their account and view the most up-to-date information/balance.
