Ruth DiRienzo-Whitehead, 50, was hit with murder charges after her son, Matthew Whitehead, was found dead inside their home in Horsham, Pennsylvania, Tuesday morning.
A Pennsylvania mom allegedly strangled her 11-year-old son with a belt because she didn’t want him growing up with the family’s financial struggles, prosecutors said Wednesday.
DiRienzo-Whitehead admitted that she strangled the boy so he wouldn’t have “to grow up with these struggles.” Prosecutors allege DiRienzo-Whitehead fled the home after strangling her son and drove 120 miles to Cape May, New Jersey, where she drove her SUV into the ocean. She was slapped with first and third-degree murder charges, as well as possession of an instrument of crime after an autopsy carried out Wednesday concluded the boy’s death was due to strangulation.

Ruth played in 1934 at the Meiji Jingu stadium on a barnstorming tour with other American stars that included Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez, and Jimmie Foxx. Ruth homered several times before 60,000 fans in games at the stadium. Only three other major ballparks remain where Ruth played: Fenway Park, Wrigley Field and Koshien Stadium in Kobe, Japan. Wrigley and Fenway have been renovated, but plans to save Meiji Jingu have been dismissed by developers and politicians.
