Nearly two weeks past the deadline, Pennsylvania lawmakers are set to vote on a budget Sunday that would be worth $50.8 billion. The details of the proposed spending plan were released Saturday night after votes in the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Leaders had been hashing out the plan behind closed doors for weeks, and now it's ready for votes on the floors of the PA House and Senate. CBS 21 is expected to learn more about the specifics of the plan today, but it does include additional money for education and it does not include revenue from skill games, which the state Supreme Court ruled were illegal slot machines.
The plan also does not touch the state's rainy day fund, which Governor Josh Shapiro had originally proposed. It moves around money from several special project funds to help cover other expenses. More than a billion dollars is also being spent on education in the state, and that includes $565 million in the "Ready-To-Learn Block Grant" funding, also known as the adequacy funds for lower income schools.
This will be the third year in a row that additional funds will go to needy districts like Harrisburg and Gettysburg. According to a fiscal note with the education funding, there are other changes to education laws that would part of the bill. That includes, districts being forced to have a 30 minute recess for students from kindergarten to 5th grade, it calls for changes to district cyber-bullying policies, and amends cyber charter school policies on wellness checks.
