In a lighthearted exchange on social media, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro rejected PETA's offer to swap Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog, with a vegan cake. This comes as the annual Groundhog Day tradition approaches, with thousands anticipating Phil's weather prediction.

Ahead of Groundhog Day , Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro playfully rejected the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals ( PETA )'s proposal to substitute the state's renowned rodent, Punxsutawney Phil, with a vegan cake . Every year, the famous groundhog captures the attention of thousands of Americans as he emerges from his burrow and is believed to predict the weather for the following weeks, contingent upon whether he observes his shadow.

Earlier this week, PETA extended the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club an offer—retire the groundhog to a reputable sanctuary, and the organization would provide a vegan 'weather reveal' cake every Groundhog Day indefinitely. PETA has persistently advocated for Punxsutawney Phil's retirement, asserting that using him exploits 'an intelligent, sensitive animal.'Just two days before Groundhog Day, which is observed annually on February 2, Shapiro responded to PETA's proposition to replace the state's celebrated Punxsutawney Phil with a vegan cake on X, formerly Twitter, simply stating: 'Come and take it.' Groundhog Day, originating in Pennsylvania and most notably celebrated by Punxsutawney Phil, dates back to 1887. The weather prediction tradition takes place on February 2, which is approximately the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. If the groundhog sees its shadow, it retreats back into its burrow, signifying six more weeks of winter. Conversely, if the groundhog fails to see its shadow, it indicates that spring weather is imminent. The tradition stems from Candlemas Day, an early European Christian holiday marking the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox. During the festivities, a bright and clear day foreshadowed a prolonged and harsh winter, while a dull, overcast day was believed to herald the arrival of spring. Historically, a badger or sacred bear was often employed to aid in weather prediction. When Germans settled in America, particularly in Pennsylvania Dutch country, they replaced badgers with a groundhog. In response to Shapiro's playful retort, 'Come and get it,' PETA wrote on X, 'It's wonderful that you support Phil's rehabilitation and release to a sanctuary! How would you like us to arrange pick-up for him?' Newsweek has submitted an online contact form to PETA for comment on Saturday.Manuel Bonder, Governor Josh Shapiro's press secretary, provided Newsweek with an email statement regarding the matter: 'The governor is resolute in his defense of this historic Pennsylvania tradition and remains dedicated to safeguarding Punxsutawney Phil, the inner circle, and their role in the Groundhog Day celebration.' Gabriella Hoffman, director of the Independent Women's Forum Center for Energy and Conservation, expressed her agreement with Governor Shapiro on X, stating, 'I agree with Governor Shapiro on something. PETA is terrible.'Tomorrow, Punxsutawney Phil will determine whether the cold weather will persist for weeks or if spring is on the horizon. It will mark the 139th celebration of Groundhog Day
